Coaching Wednesdays: Readiness for Coaching

An important part of the pre-contracting conversation is to establish whether the potential coachee understands coaching, particularly the non-directive style of coaching and their responsibility for taking actions towards achieving their goals.

We include the following in our pre-contracting information sheet to help potential coachees consider whether coaching is the right option for them at this time:

Are you ready for coaching?

Having an open mind and being willing to explore new perspectives is the most important readiness test for coachees.  This will ensure that you get the maximum benefit possible from your sessions.

It is also helpful to have considered the following prior to your sessions:

  • Why have I entered the coaching process?
  • In what area of my life do I wish to bring about change?
  • Why do I wish to bring about change?
  • What is the most important point I want to focus on?
  • What do I want to get out of this session?

It is also important to remember that a coach is there to support you to bring about the change you want and not to judge you. You need to be willing to try to implement any changes in your own behaviour – these will be areas you would like to develop, as identified by you.
